Is Acura the Apple of the Automotive Industry?

You know how you go to a conference and most of the smart, interesting folks are using Apple hardware? I’ve been noticing a trend among my colleagues at work and those whom I’ve met at user groups and conferences–the very same folks who are at the top of their game developing software also drive Acuras. Coincidence?

Disclaimer: Yes, I drive a 2004 Acura TL and one reason (out of many) that I bought the car was for the technology (bluetooth hands-free-link, for example). Though I’m not conceited enough to consider myself a kick-ass software engineer.

Interesting observation. As a user of both I’d like to believe there’s some truth to it.

With that in mind, one might think that Acura’s iPod connector (MusicLink I think) would be as well thought out as a Mac or an Acura. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. I have one and let me tell you, it’s an ugly hack.

The software on you Mac adds half a dozen playlists to your iPod. When in the car you changes modes by altering the “CD” that you have selected. It’s not something they should charge $400 for.

Thanks, I’ve wanted to rant about that for some time.

    Steve,

I’ve heard bad things about the Acura iPod link as well … one person even said she had to let it run overnight on her PowerBook to generate the TTS voice prompts. They definitely need to rethink their software. It would be nice if Apple helped standardize the (audio) interface for vehicle integration.

As far as charging extra for it, I can understand that they need to recoup their labor and materials cost (though $400 seems to give them quite a fat profit margin). I was hoping that the 2007 models would all come standard with factory installed iPod integration.

    Thanks,
    Sean
